SecureEFS – File-system encryption with the citizen card

This project utilizes the concept of the austrian citizen card to achieve a file-system encryption. Since Windows 2000 Microsoft ships a file-system encryption technology called EFS which lacks in the field of mandates and smart card integration. This issue is addressed by SecureEFS. EFS keys are protected by utilizing the austrian citizen card.

SecureEFS additionally requires a citicen card environment (BKU) which is provided free of charge by the Federal Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt) protected by the Generallizenz des Bundeskanzleramts.

Running SecureEFS on Windows Vista and later versions

SecureEFS is only executable on Windows XP and Windows 2000, support for later versions is not provided. Starting from Windows Vista EFS has built-in support for smartcards, therefore EFS keys can be stored secure on the file-system.
